Each uses two regular dice (numbers 1–6). If their sums are equal, it's a tie. What's the probability of a tie?
Answer: 1 in 36. Why? The clever Nine Mortal Ways disciple brings two dice that always roll 6, totaling 12, while the Lone Cloud disciple rolls honestly, getting any sum from 2 to 12. Out of 36 possible combinations, only double sixes from Lone Cloud Disciples can tie, so 1/36.
Exercise 2: During tea season, Velvet Shade hosts daily tea tastings. Each day, guests are served one of three teas at Revelry Hall: Jing Mountain, Qujiang Thin Slice, or Xianya Stone Flower.
The chances are: 40% for Jing Mountain, 30% each for Qujiang Thin Slice and Xianya Stone Flower. So, how many days, on average, would it take for a guest to taste all three?
Answer: Simple calculation shows it's about 5.6 days. But, of course, you could always sneak into the kitchen of Revelry Hall and try them all in one go.
