Refer to Pouring out the Cup, the 3rd piece in the Dunhuang Music Score. The Dunhuang Melody Scroll was originally housed in the Sutra Cave of the Mogao Grottoes. Its front side bears the Sermon for the Sacred Festival at the Zhongxing Hall in the Fourth Year of Changxing, while the reverse side contains transcriptions of 25 melody scrolls. Generally believed to be a pipa score, it dates to the late Tang or Five Dynasties period. The notation system used is a semi-symbolic script known as semi-character notation of Yan's Melody, famed for its enigmatic nature, earning it the nickname "the gobbledy-gook of music." The scroll was taken from Dunhuang by French sinologist Paul Pelliot in 1908 and is now held in the Bibliothèque nationale de France, catalogued as P.3808.
