Originally a title from Tang imperial music, this tune exists in several forms, many of them classified as double tunes. Li Qunyu's Parting with Magistrate Ma reads: "Only the strings understand the guest's feelings, clearly playing Gratitude in farewell." Bai Juyi's Hearing a Singing Girl Perform Yan's Work notes: "Yet she left behind the love of others; among them, Su Xiaoxiao felt the deepest gratitude." After the tune was introduced to Japan, it likewise underwent adaptation. The History of Great Japan records Gratitude in the Heijo mode, and it is also catalogued under other modal systems such as Kojiki and Sei.
