Once a shining city on the water's skin— Now a stinking swamp, a graveyard steeped in sin! All because— Some devil-brained rogue struck at the sky, A scorpion-hearted woman let her mercy die, A wretch with bones that rot within, And crowds of fiends with knives that grin— Till walls gave way And fire had its day, and Death rode in, hungry for his prey. Now only this dead lake heaves each night, Wailing to shake the earth with spite. Facing Qinchuan, back to the bay— There rides the villain, wild in his sway. One boot kicks heaven's gates apart, blood on his hands, fear in his heart. Arrows from the court fly fast, The underworld sharpens its blades at last. Water locked down, roads shut tight, gates barred in fright— All waiting for the traitor to come, To answer for what he's done, So justice can rise and drums may drum, And feasts return with pipe and strum. A pale face, a cold-blooded mind, A girl who whirls like a sprite unkind. Quiet eyes that trade in lies, soft hands spinning silken ties. Poison stakes in peach trees stand, a laughing chill through every man. Hatred roars, then snuffs her flame— Through ghostly gates she goes, no name. Great waves crash hard upon the shore—Where lie the heroes from before? Some strode proud through palace light. Some bent low, boots kissed outright. In the end, all fall the same—two stiff legs, a mound, no fame. Let heaven shake, let earth upend— A kindness paid, a grudge to end; blood for debt and head for friend. Sun sinks low, the city's gone. The golden peach—where will it dawn? Still swinging in the windy air, half a dream in mist out there.
