Dear Wanderer,
The end of the year draws near, and at last, we are enduring the final days of winter. Fortunately, the autumn harvest was bountiful, and the village has stockpiled enough firewood and supplies to be spared from the bite of cold and hunger. How are you out there in the jianghu? Are you eating well and keeping warm?
Word has it you have headed north; we're wondering when you might return. Most of us were refugees from those very lands, so the news has us all a little worried. It is said some dwelt south of the river, gathering duck eggs amidst the reed marshes; others lived at the mountain's foot, tending to terraced fields... We all pray for your safety on this journey. When your travels bring you past our village once more, please stay a while to rest and share with us the stories of the north.
The villagers have been in high spirits lately, each household busy with preparations for the New Year.
Lingniang even made malt candy from grain, and the kids love it. It has been a hard year for everyone, and we all deserve a taste of sweetness at its end. We have saved a portion for you; if you've got time, do come back and have a taste.
On behalf of the entire village, I wish you a joyous New Year. May you remain free from illness and find peace in the coming year. Welcome home at any time.
