On chilly autumn nights, one bowl of yam porridge could ward off hunger. In Offerings from the Mountain Home by Lin Hong of the Song Dynasty, the dish Golden Jade Soup is described as "yam and chestnut slices simmered in seasoned lamb broth." Warming and nourishing, this soup was made by the Fuling Sisters of Apricot Village using homegrown yams and distributed freely to the elderly and travelers in need. Though meatless, the soup remained rich in flavor, its golden sheen reflecting the villagers' kindness.
