Meat Stew is said to have originated from ancient sacrificial rites. After the rites, the sacrificial meat will be cut into rectangular chunks, tied with cattail or rush grass into bundles, and distributed to the participants to take home and braise in soy sauce, gradually evolving into the dish known today. Another folk tale traces its origins to the Oath of the Peach Garden at the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty. After Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei took an oath of fraternity in the Peach Garden, Zhang made a dish of stewed pork. Though the story is not recorded in official history and is likely a later embellishment, it adds a colorful layer to the dish's legacy.
