The yellow croaker of Luokou is said to be without equal.
As early as the Song Dynasty, the Taiping Yulan recorded the "stonehead fish," a species with many aliases, including "yellow croaker." To distinguish it from common croakers, ancient scholars insisted that a true shishou must possess well-developed ear bones. Its flavor is famed for its delicacy, inspiring the saying: "Of all fish in the world, Luokou's yellow croaker stands above."
